The American South Meets the Mediterranean: Fried Green Tomatoes with Spicy Tzatziki Dipping Sauce

RECIPES:

Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • Two Green Tomatoes

  • 1 Tsp Old Bay Seasoning

  • 1 Tsp Salt

  • 1 Tsp Pepper

  • 1 Cup Buttermilk

  • 1 Egg

  • 1 Cup Cornmeal

  • 1 Cup All Purpose Flour

Preparation

  1. Slice Tomatoes into ¼ inch slices

  2. Mix flour, salt and pepper. Coat the slices well in the flour mixture. Let them rest for ten minutes.

  3. Heat your vegetable oil up in a cast iron skillet. To check if it is hot, place the end of a wooden spoon into the oil. If it bubbles, you’re good. For a more thorough check, the oil should reach about 350°

  4. Beat egg and buttermilk together lightly.

  5. Mix cornmeal and old bay seasoning together.

  6. Dredge the tomatoes in the egg and buttermilk mixture, then coat with the cornmeal.

  7. Fry the tomatoes for about six minutes, three minutes on each side. They should be golden brown.

Spicy Tzatziki Sauce

Preparation

  1. Put Greek yogurt into a medium mixing bowl.

  2. Grate the cucumber (I don’t peel it, but you can). Add the cucumber to the yogurt.

  3. Add chopped fresh dill, chopped banana pepper and finely minced garlic.

I put this sauce on so many things. It is so good, light and healthy! Dip your FGT in this and you'll be smiling all day ! :)
